To another traveller I would say these two things:
– Dont do this trekk in Juli / August, as it is very very hot and there is almost no shaddow on the entire trekk.
– Inform yourself about Cattle dogs and take security measures.

The accommodations were generally better than expected. We were consistently spoiled with excellent food, especially at the smaller, privately run lodgings. The car service was also flawless and always punctual.

We hiked Zbulo!'s 11-day self guided Peaks of the Balkans trail. Zbulo! provided excellent organization, good value for money and quick help when questions arose during the trip.
Most guesthouses had a better standard than the trip description suggested, they all were upgraded since my first trip in 2021.

The trail is still a great experience although it is not an insider tip any more.
Theth suffers from overtourism, make sure to stay in a guesthouse in the upper part of the valley like Kometa, that was still quiet and authentic.

Being with a local company felt like a really positive way to support the countries we were travelling in – esp as countries that are really working hard to promote tourism business to assist more remote communities to flourish. It also meant that any special arrangements like additional transport at the start and end of the hike were easily sorted. Couldn’t recommend the hike more highly as one that offers an exceptional variety of landscapes and culture, and couldn’t recommend Zbulo! more highly as a company to travel with. Thank you!

BORDER CROSSING PERMITS
As you are planning to take on the cross border trails of the Peaks of the Balkans, the High Scardus or the Via Dinarica, you have surely come across the need for border crossing permits. These permits are part of a special application system used by hikers and cyclists who wish to cross the “green borders” between Albania, Kosovo, Montenegro or North Macedonia. Even if you don’t book a trip with us and prefer to explore these trails independently, we can assist you with obtaining your permits.
