7-day guided three-peak challenge in the Balkans

A demanding summit journey through the borderlands of Albania and Kosovo

This demanding guided week links three major summit objectives in the mountain borderlands of Albania and Kosovo. From Radomire, attempt Mount Korab before continuing into Kosovo for Mount Gjeravica (2,656 m) and an overnight in the high-pasture settlement of Doberdol.

The route then crosses the Albanian borderlands through Balqin and Cerem. The third summit objective, Mount Kolata, is approached via Persllopi Pass on the way to Kukaj. Long ascents, substantial descents and consecutive mountain days make this a trip for fit, experienced hikers. Your guide adapts summit plans to the group, weather and trail conditions.

The journey ends with the boat crossing of Komani Lake and a final night in Tirana.

Meet the group in Tirana or at Tirana Airport for the transfer east to Radomire. The journey leaves the central lowlands and approaches the Korab massif through the Dibra region.

At the village guesthouse, meet your guide and fellow travellers, receive a briefing on the three summit objectives and prepare for the early start. Dinner is served at the accommodation.

Begin early for the ascent of Mount Korab (2,764 m). The route crosses alpine meadows, rocky ground and the upper border ridge, with substantial ascent and descent but no technical climbing.

Weather, trail conditions and the group determine whether your guide continues to the summit. Return to Radomire by the same mountain route before transferring across the region to Gjakova in Kosovo.

This is a long day combining the first summit objective with an onward road journey. The group stays in a hotel in Gjakova.

Transfer from Gjakova to the mountain trailhead and begin the ascent towards Mount Gjeravica (2,656 m). The route crosses open pasture, alpine terrain and a series of glacial lakes beneath the summit ridge.

Weather, trail conditions and the group determine whether your guide continues to the summit. The route then descends towards Doberdol, crossing into Albania’s high border pastures.

The night is spent in simple shepherd huts with shared facilities. Temperatures can fall sharply after sunset at this altitude.

Leave Doberdol and walk west through open grazing land and the high border terrain. The route passes seasonal pasture areas around Balqin before descending through forest and meadows towards Cerem.

This is a lower summit-free stage between the two demanding mountain objectives, though the route remains remote and includes sustained walking on mountain paths.

The group stays in a simple guesthouse in Cerem. Your guide provides context on the border landscape and adjusts the route where conditions require.

Leave Cerem and climb through the border highlands towards Persllopi Pass (2,039 m). The route crosses rocky karst terrain beneath Mount Kolata and requires steady footing.

When weather, trail conditions and the group allow, your guide may continue towards Mount Kolata (2,534 m), the third summit objective of the journey. The summit extension adds substantial ascent and should not be treated as guaranteed.

Descend towards Kukaj and the Valbona Valley for the final mountain night.

    Koman Lake

Leave the Valbona Valley and transfer to the ferry terminal at Fierza. The boat journey across Komani Lake passes between steep mountain walls and provides a contrasting final view of northern Albania.

After leaving the lake, stop for the planned lunch and continue by road to Tirana. The capital’s busy streets contrast with the summit routes and simple mountain accommodation of the previous days.

The final night is spent in Tirana, with the evening free after the journey from the Albanian Alps.
