8-day self-guided Peaks of the Balkans trek
Hiking beyond borders in Albania and Montenegro – the highlights
This eight-day self-guided Peaks of the Balkans journey crosses the Accursed Mountains between Albania and Montenegro. Travel from Shkodër to the Albanian Alps on a boat journey across fjord-like Komani Lake, then hike from the Valbona Valley through the Gash River Reserve to the summer pasture of Doberdol for a night in simple shepherd huts.

The route includes Lake Hrid, the peaks of Taljanka and Popadija above the Grebaja Valley, and a mountain crossing through the Ropojana Valley to Theth. The final walk reaches Nderlysaj before returning to Tirana.
We arrange transfers, luggage transport and overnight stays, and provide route materials and support for the self-guided journey.

The Grebaja Valley is one of the most awe-inspiring landscapes in the Balkans and a highlight of Prokletije National Park. A morning transfer leads into the narrow valley beneath the rugged karst towers of Karanfili (2,461 m).
Climb through shaded, fairy-tale beech forest to an enclosed alpine meadow, then join the ridge leading towards Taljanka and Popadija (2,056 m). The high viewpoints look across the valley and towards Albania’s Kelmend highlands, while the dramatic walls of Karanfili rise opposite.
The full circuit includes steep sections and a sustained descent, so follow the recommended route for the day’s conditions and your available time. After returning to the valley floor, transfer to Vusanje for the night. A short evening walk to the Grla waterfall is possible.

Activity
A trekking with six continous walking days, mostly in the 6-8 h range. Trails are waymarked but not maintained, orientation requires previous experience navigating by GPS. Limited phone signal means we cannot provide remote support and you may need to be self-sufficent.
Accommodation
Framed by a comfortable first and last hotel overnight in the cities, there's a mix of welcoming guesthouses and huts, including the rustic stay on Doberdol alp. Rooms will be private, but not always ensuite. Zbulo books double and twin rooms, but the huts hosts can fail to manage bookings and may accommodate your party in a quad room instead.
Weather
Summer sees stable mountain weather with daytime temperatures of 20-27°C. While nights at high altitude can dip into the single digits, they don't slip into minus degrees - take a light sleeping bag or liner if you worry about feeling cold. Occasional (torrential) thunderstorms last 30-45 min, whereas multiple days of continuous rainfall are rare - less than 10% of annual precipitation fall in summer.
There may be a few snow fields as late as mid-June. In July and August, prepare for heat in Shkodra and Tirana. Traveling prior to June or later as mid-September, make sure to pack sufficient warm cloth and a three season sleeping bag. From late September, rain and fog become more likely, daylight hours shorten and nighttime temperatures drop.

trip reviews
I would like to express our complete satisfaction with our 8-day self-guided experience on the Peaks of the Balkans. The Zbulo team did an impeccable job, demonstrating an outstanding level of professionalism, organization, and efficiency at every stage.
We were the first group of Brazilians (a group of 6) to complete the trekking with the agency, and we were extremely impressed by the quality of the service. From the initial logistics of transfers and accommodations to the border-crossing permits, detailed maps, and emergency support, everything was executed with absolute precision, providing a strong sense of safety throughout the entire trek.
I would also like to highlight the excellent service provided by everyone involved: drivers, support staff, and the owners and staff at the guesthouses and hotels—all of whom were exceptionally friendly and helpful.
A special thanks to Eda and Ricardo, who supported us from the planning phase and initial Q&A all the way through to the trekking guidance, always with promptness and clarity; to Arsina, for her seamless assistance throughout the trail; and to Zamir, who handled our arrival and departure airport transfers and delivered a remarkably clear, comprehensive, and welcoming initial briefing.
Your work was fundamental to the success and peace of mind of our expedition. Zbulo has truly solidified itself as our top recommendation for future trips to Albania and the region.
Thank you all very much for your professionalism and outstanding service!
Zbulo made the the trip easy. All logistics worked. The walk was everything thing we wanted. The Albanians are great people- go and meet them!
If you are interested in seeing and trekking in this beautiful part of the world, but aren’t sure how to tackle logistics, borders, etc, then ZBULO is the partner you need.
We loved our experience with Zbulo. Everything went smoothly. Our expectations were consistently exceeded. The people that helped along the way; from drivers to guesthouse owners and workers were helpful, friendly, and accommodating. I highly recommend Zbulo and this trek.
We cannot say enough good things about this trip. It was well organized, incredible scenery, best food, great conversations with locals who run the guesthouses. We loved every minute.
Self-guided trip with Zbulo was well worth the money spent. Zbolu uses their experience, knowledge and relationships to take the guesswork out of booking this trip independently. All the staff were met and dealt with were professional and freindly.
Alles was goed gepland.
Special thanks to eddy for the good explanation on the first day, I hope you guys keep up the good work, it was our pleasure
(Translated by Google) We enjoyed traveling with this organization. We did the Peaks of the Balkans with a group of four. Initially, you receive a paper tear-off booklet, and you give the top page to each accommodation, transfer, and so on. It was truly carefree travel, just hiking and enjoying yourself. No hassle with permits, and you support the local population. Thanks!

Merci!
This was a great hike! It was challenging and had great views. Our guides were supportive and informative and went above and beyond to make the trip memorable. The accommodation and food was also great.
Wow, this self-guided Peaks of the Balkans Tour by Zbulo completely exceeded our expectations. The actual trekking, remoteness and beauty of the location was breathtaking from beginning to end. It’s amazing that places like this still exist. The Autumn colors were as if out of a painting. It was my first time doing a self-guided tour, and I must say Zbulo did a 10/10 job. Everything ran so smoothly from start to end that even I was surprised. The transfers were prompt, the staff were friendly, the accommodation was cozy, and the food delicious. The GPX tracks also make life much easier out in the wilderness. We had one day with heavy rain where Zbulo immediately made alternative arrangements for us. They were also available via phone or WhatsApp. So thank you Zbulo for this trip of a lifetime. And folks before it’s too late, don’t miss out.

Brilliant organisation, great communication, plenty of pre-departure information and advice, flexible dates and a friendly team meant the build up to our Albanian adventure was stress-free. Once we arrived in Tirana, our pick ups, luggage transfers and overnight stays all fitted together seamlessly. Super-friendly drivers, welcoming hosts, and tonnes of useful local knowledge. We did a LOT of route planning before departure, but on the whole, the route itself is well marked with red and white markings on trees or rocks, and the supplied GPS quickly told us if we went slightly off-route. Every day is different, the scenery is breathtaking, the mountains are stunning, the hikes are do-able if you’re fit and we LOVED them all. The hosts provide home-cooked simple but very welcome food, and the accommodation is basic but mostly comfortable. Two negatives: one was a 24-hour sickness bug that so many other hikers seemed to be getting hit by – with lots of discussions about whether it was caused by the drinking water, the (sometimes very) basic bathroom facilities, or food prep. It would be useful for Zbullo – the local agents – to do some digging around to try and get to the bottom of this. The other negative was that some of the vans/jeeps we were picked up in had no seatbelts, which was sometimes more than a bit worrying considering the hairpin bends and lack of tarmac! But overall, this is one adventure we will never forget, and we will definitely book another hiking trip with The Natural Adventure company.
An amazing trip that was challenging and incredible all in one. The Zbulo team look after you as if you are family and always there to help. The accommodation was clean and comfortable and hosts always welcoming with a smile and great food
There are many companies doing this trip but i think Zbulo is the BEST
Maybe in the hight of summer as soooo hot being able to start hiking 1/2hr earlier say pick usps at 7:30 would really help.
Overall Riccardo Eda and Arsina you are amazing
Many thanks for your help and flexibility when we got sick!
– although in general we think it is very necessary that in the area measures are taken to protect nature, water quality and traditional way of mountain life in a sustainable way. The invasion of tourists seems too much to handle and travelers (first!), local government, local tourist industry and natural park management, with help from UNESCO and EU, all need to take responsibility and take immediate action to protect the area. Garbage, traffic and energy need to be managed. We think the sickness is just a symptom of the strain on the area.
I’ll get back to you because we’re aware this is a very easy comment to make. We are committed to contribute if we can.
Zbulo is an amazing company that supported us all the way, from the 1st question to the last night of our self guided Peaks of the Balkans trip they were like family
The trip is amazing (you do need to be fit) and ran like clockwork. All of the accommodation was pre booked in amazing authentic guesthouses and huts (comfy beds) with amazingly friendly hosts that cooked great food and the drivers also friendly and happy
Coming from Australia, Zbulo made it so easy for us.
Would recommend them to anyone who wants a professional but caring company to look after them on a peaks of the Balkans trip
The trails were easy to find. The hostels where we staid offered more then we expected. The Zbulo service and support was great
This is an amazing adventure and the company were brilliant from start to finish. I would recommend booking with them directly as we had a lot of extra info before the trip so that we were better prepared than others who had booked through an English/German agency.
The hike itself is amazing but the benefit of doing a group tour (Peaks of the Balkans 9 days) is that all of the logistics are sorted, which is much easier given that most of the older generation only speak Albanian. I would recommend this trip to anyone who is even vaguely thinking about it- the walks were incredible and the guesthouses were all very comfortable along the way. The guides were very good at adjusting to our pace and interests. The previous information about long waits for visas into Montenegro is no longer valid as this is all done online and once again showed Zbulo’s efficiency and logistical competence. A brilliant trip that I will remember for a lifetime.
Well organized trip. Very helpful people at Zbulo, drivers and guesthouses. The roadbook and GPS provided by Zbole proved to be indispenable during the hikes. Highly recommended !
Stopping for coffee in baqir
Truly unique experience that was wonderful
Loved doberdol and stopping for a coffee in baniq (so?) thought the vusanje guest house was by far the best one with generous delicious food.
Truly beautiful and warm people made for a unique experience. I do see tourism pressure pushing to change some of the raw ethnic feeling we experienced so go sooner than later. The mountains were fierce and “alp”-like and everything I hoped they’d be.
The hike from vusanje to teth. Wonderful sceneries.
Do it! And walking with the gps is easy!
Traumhafte Tage trotz Regen, Hitze, schmerzende Füße.
I can highly recommend Zbulo and his team which is extremely organized, very friendly and high professional. We had a great time at our self guided trip in Albania and Montenegro. The given hardware worked absolutely fine and we didn’t had any problems with the itinerary. The accommodation were always very welcome and clean. Every single transfer was extremely punctual and we felt so safe within the wilderness of the mountains. Thanks Ricardo, Endrit and Leonora for your great job, well done!!
Great experience from both the cultural and natural history perspectives.
Don’t take the trip too lightly: it’ll be more enjoyable if you’re fit.
Amazing landscape for hiking. Further more an excellent organised trip by Zbulo: wonderful guesthouses, great communication.
Zbulo was flawless in executing all the particulars of the trip. Really beautiful hikes. Food was great, accommodations were as described. Overall we were really happy with the trip.
I am impressed by the attention and care from Zebulom!
It was an incredible journey.
My thanks to Zamir and Arsina, as well as the team members I didn’t interact with directly.
Heartfelt thanks.
I would absolutely recommend this trip! The experience was magnificent from beginning to end and exceeded all of my expectations.
The route is breathtaking, and the whole experience of doing the trek was truly special. Everything was incredibly well organized, from the itinerary and self-guided materials to the transfers, accommodations, meals and support along the way.
Even though it is a self-guided trek, I always felt supported and safe. Every reception we had was warm and welcoming, and all the people involved were extremely kind and helpful.
I was also pleasantly surprised by the food. At first, some of the meals looked a little unusual to me, but once I tried them, I absolutely loved them!
I honestly loved every single part of this experience. If you are considering doing this trip, go for it — you will have an unforgettable experience!
Hard to give feedback on what to improve – I enjoyed all of it.
Overall a fantastic trip, good value for money, good food, good route and materials, helpful staff, easy transfers.
A good planned route thru a spectacular landscape. Good selected simple overnights with good food.
Transfers works. Good contact with Zbulo, short change in plan works well.
Thank you!
Excellent logistics, great accommodation, fantastic hospitality, delicious food, incredible walks and views, and high quality self-guiding materials made this a brilliant holiday. Go to Albania now to experience pristine forests, quiet trails and fabulous local hospitality.
The route and the logistics were very good, beautiful scenery.
Well organized, excellent communication, clear trip information provided, beautiful scenery!
Amazing support, great logistics, beautiful route. Excellent experience overall!
The whole thing was incredible, a true once in a lifetime trip. The organisation, accommodation and meals were all brilliant and the route and scenery were also fantastic. Zbulo’s self guided materials were impressively comprehensive. Albania is a brilliant country from the cities to the mountains and is well worth the experience.
Everything was fantastic. I was initially concerned about how things would work when we arrived in Albania but everything was covered. The information was superb, materials were spot on. Transfers were all on-time and excellent. Accommodation choices were really good in context, generally excellent. Communication was also excellent throughout. The key take-away for me is that Zbulo had everythnig covered and you were able to rely upon them. In fact, it was a much more sophisticated operation than I was expecting.
The location, the guesthouses, the dinners !!!! The drivers were also so cool and funny. Montenegro was our biggest coup de coeur. It was super well organized and we couldn’t be happier with our trip !
Je recommande +++
It was an amazing trip, very well organized with Zbulo. The Hikes are beautiful, the GPS really self explenatory. The hosts were all really friendly with great hospitality. If you had questions you could contact Zbulo easly and they could help. I am really happy with the trip!
The people was nice and we got good service from everyone we met. Also, the landscape was beautiful.
We had a great experience with Zbulo’s 8-day Peaks of the Balkan self guided trek. The logistics worked seamlessly, everyone was super helpful and we truly enjoyed the trails. We didn’t use the the small gps device at all, Gaia GPS app in our mobile phones was perfect.
Worth of every penny, all the tracks were great! Arrangements worked perfectly, everything was in order and we could truly rely on Zbulo. Gaia app was good!
Recommended
This is a great trek with many geographical and natural highlights! Zbulo can build the trek to your individual needs.
Everything was well aranged. The guesthouses were great, de transfers were always on time and very friendly. Nice hikingprogram. When we had some difficulties we always could count on ZBulo for assistence. Thanks for a wonderfull trip.
Perfect oberall organisation. Even flexibility when itenerary changed due to weather conditions.
Absolutely stunning hikes, very well organized by Zbulo who booked all our stays and sorted the logistics of our bags.
Everything was well organized. Transfers were always on time. When there was bad weather and we couldn’t walk, transfer to the next accommodation was already arranged.
It was a perfectly organized trip—from our arrival and the warm welcome to the drives, transfers, and accommodations. I could list countless things, but truly everything was organized to perfection. Every single detail, no matter how small, was thought of. For example, we received luggage tags for the baggage transport that clearly stated our next destination, ensuring that nothing could get lost. We were also provided with detailed itineraries including contact phone numbers for everyone assisting us along our tour. Everything went flawlessly, and the drivers were always punctual to the minute. I highly recommend this agency. We have taken many trips to countries all over the world, and this was by far the best organization we have ever experienced.
Great trip, well organized, all was smooth, the guide was excellent. The food in part of the guest house was not good, and there was not enough
Self-guided trip with Zbulo was well worth the money spent. Zbolu uses their experience, knowledge and relationships to take the guesswork out of booking this trip independently. All the staff were met and dealt with were professional and freindly.
I will recommend Zbulo as a very reliable agency and a good supplier.
Amazing hike! Beautiful scenery and well organized.
Excellent itinerary and logistics planning.
Excellent coordination by Zbulo from preparation to end. We were not entirely aware that our main bags would be transported FOR us from hut to hut. While this was great, I would have prepared a little differently, making sure I had a proper day pack and then packed all else in a duffle. The food was pretty good and varied throughout, so no complaints there. And all hosts were accommodating and lovely. This was an great 8 day trip!
Everything was perfectly organised during our individual 8 days Balkan Trail. BIG thank you for the Zbulo team.
Best trip ever!
We absolutely loved our trip. Zbulo were amazing from start to finish and we commented to so many people that even through little niggles in transport/scheduling, Zbulo were so responsive, helpful and friendly. We felt like their only customers at the time!
Before we left, the team were outstanding in helping plan our trip, accommodating our extra nights to achieve the extra walks we wanted to include (outwith the self guided tour). Answering even what we know now were silly questions with detail and politeness.
On the trip, the team were always on hand and sorted out any issues we had really quickly
While the kit given was good, we preferred to use the Gaia app (recommended by Zbulo) with the GPX files provided as this worked best for us.
The guesthouses were all immaculate and the most welcoming people ever! The food and accommodation was way above what I expected with great meals, towels, comfy beds – exactly what tired walkers needed
Highly recommend the self guided option. They took care of all the logistics which left us free to concentrate on the hike. The self guided option provides support but also allows us to be flexible. It was reassuring to know Zbulo were there for support whenever we needed, and we needed it. Highly recommend!
Special thanks to Arsina, Ricardo, the drivers and accommodation hosts for their exceptional service. We can’t thank you enough
Overall, I was extremely satisfied with the trip and the organization!
Blank line
You have to be aware that Albania is still under development, and not everything is the same as in Germany. Some cars are very old and no longer roadworthy by German standards.
The food isn’t very varied either, but you get beautiful scenery, super friendly and reliable people, and a very fair price.
From first contact to the final day of our holiday, Zbulo Communications, logistics and arrangements worked perfectly. . Email contact was very good; we slightly tailored the holiday and Zbulo helped. All the staff, whether drivers or those at the base, were respectful and quick to respond. All of us in the group, six friends, would utterly, without any reservation, recommend Zbulo
Zbulo catered a great experience for our small group. All the accomodations were very comfortable, and the trail itself was amazing. We appreciated the value of the Zbulo experience compared to other companies we looked into. Would highly recommend!
Over all – the hikes were very scenic and well organized. We had a great time and would highly recommend your services to others!
Thank so much!
We had an excellent trip, everything was very well arranged and we appreciated both the scenery and hospitality of the people. We hope to come back next year to try another trip with Zbulo!
3 of 5 got stomach flu! Very sick at the end.
We booked our trip with Zbulo and were very happy we did! Everything was very well organised, the accomodations were very nice, the meals included,… The roadbook was helpfull and clear. I would highly recommend this organisation.
The best hike for a group of friends or with family with immersion in pristine nature. Try different extensions f you have time.
Very professional
It should be longer trek on a day (30 km). But otherwise, very nice trek, everythink was perfect !
Really perfect organization but zbulo 👌
We had a wonderful and memorable experience as a family (kids aged 11, 13 and 16) ; it was quite difficult but so great 🤩
We went on a family trek along the Peak of the Balkans route, and everything was absolutely perfect thanks to Zbulo.
The accommodations were carefully selected, the food was delicious, and the equipment and instructions for doing the strek independently were perfectly suited.
The suggested itineraries were varied, stunning, and a real pleasure to hike.
We shared wonderful moments together as a family.
A huge thank you to the whole team — we highly recommend Zbulo without hesitation!
Top class logistics and a great itinerary. Choice of places to stay and overall experience was fantastic. Would heartily recommend to anybody.
Just to say thank you for a great trip!
Every encounter, drivers, guest house operators- were all friendly and helpful.
The trip was very well organized from the multiple informative emails prior to the trip to the very detailed day by day itinerary. The beautiful scenery was complemented by the lovely guesthouses and tasty meals.
Thanks for a memorable 8 days. I feel lucky to have had the experience this summer – I am sure you are going to be getting a lot busier over the upcoming years.
We were lucky to have Zbulo organising the trip. Super efficient and friendly. Albania is wonderful and Zbulo were the perfect guides.
First visit to Albania and Montenegro. Loved it all.
Great trip, well planned and thought through, amazing hosts and flexibility to change things when needed.
Zbulo is the best! They always answered my emails with stellar response times, and bent over backwards to create a custom itinerary that fit our needs. On top of that, half way through the trip we asked to extend our itinerary by a day (because we needed to squeeze in one more beautiful hike), and they pulled the strings to make it happen. Their coordination of details was flawless and made it so we could just relax and enjoy the amazing food, scenery and people. I would highly recommend trusting your itinerary to their capable staff. Albania is amazing.
Zbulo was highly professional and easy to deal with, but one should carefully check recent trip reports regarding the state of norovirus infections in the area, particularly in Valbona/Dobërdoll.
Great hike got to be fit. The zbulo team professional , caring and friendly. Always there to help
Amazing hike, the accomodation was always comfy even thou Im over 180cm tall and heaps of food
Excellent all round adventure
I would strongly recommend booking a hiking tour with Zbulo for the following reasons:
-Very responsive communication, both before the, during and after the trip.
-Very receptive to tailoring the trip to your needs and preferences.
-Their expert understanding of the region, in both Albania and beyond, ensures you going to the best places, both in terms of walking but also accommodation and restaurants.
-Helpful materials given for the trip such as paper guides, maps and a Garmin ensures there was a balance on our self-guided trip of doing it ourselves with expert support in the background.

Thoroughly enjoyed this trip. Scenery breathtaking, hospitality great with a special mention for Vila Dini in Valpone – Baseem, the host was lovely and the chef gave us our best meal of the trip!
The Albanian travel company Zbulo organised all the pick ups and luggage transfers seamlessly. The scenery and walking were absolutely superb, with wonderful wild flowers on the way. The walking was challenging at times mainly due to the unusually hot weather. We were unwell for a day or two and met quite a few other walkers who had also been unwell. We were worried that this might have been the water that we were encouraged to drink. We were a bit disappointed with the site at Doberdol where we stayed. We had walked all day and arrived at a construction site! The owners were adding to the accommodation. The existing facilities were not great and probably need an upgrade. Also we actually checked into another guesthouse when we arrived at Babino Polje as the site owners were in the middle of building works and renovations and the site was a bit of a mess, so we spent the night at the next door guesthouse. The owners of the guesthouses were on the whole charming and very welcoming and we met some interesting fellow travellers. Navigation was at times difficult. The route is not always reliably way marked, the GPS supplied is very small. Fortunately we managed to navigate using the Outdooractive App that you recommended and the GPX files you sent, so thank you for that. The only published map is not great. Your info pack was very helpful and the printed copy you gave us was very useful as you cannot always reliably use your mobile. Overall an amazing and unforgettable experience.
The friendliness and hospitality of the people/hosts we met. It was nice to be in a country that is not yet jaded by over tourism. Trails were in great shape . Scenery of course- next time I would add some more peak bagging to the agenda- this trip we had time restraints
Organization is superb, POB can easily be done self guided for those with experience but definitely recommend that they have your company do the logistics re accommodation and transport
Hiking in from Valbone to Çerem and the three peaks en route to Vasanje
Would absolutely recommend Zebulo – very efficient, good communication, excellent organization, wonderful collection of online resources
Beautiful scenery and hiking.Generous hosts
Scenery. Very nice local people, hosts.
Zbulo is great at helping with changing needs during the trip. Very well organized and documented. Spectacular scenery and interesting itinerary.
The boat ride on Lake Koman (beautiful!!)
The Vusanje Peja pass Theth hike (the landscape was incredible)
Each guest houses
Don’t hesitate, it’s a wonderful experience!
Don’t forget to take a plastic box and small bags for your lunches
Zbulo knows their stuff. Their itinerary and logistics were excellent. Guesthouses had great food and wonderful hospitality. Hikes were strenuous, but gorgeous. We enjoyed the company of hikers we met along the way. An amazing adventure!
The Peja pass from Montenegro crossing back into Theth.
The valley circuit walk (can’t remember the name).
The peak of the mountain that is where the 3 borders meet
The hotel in Vusanje (super clean, good food, amazing views)
It’s very beautiful and is fun and challenging trekking. You meet great people and its fun all sitting down to dinner together in the evenings. The place is being developed fast so get there quick. Some of the accommodation and food is quite basic and some of the driving is dangerous (no seat belts or head rests driving fast on mountain roads). Overall I’d recommend it for people looking for an adventurous trip.
-Crossing the Peja Pass AMAZING!!
-Meeting great people from around the world
-Lake Harid (sp)
-have complete confidence when booking a self guided tour as the GPS, guidebook and trails are very thorough
It’s so hard to choose!! For me the trails were just perfect. The routes are stunning, the aspects are gorgeous, the climbs are strenuous but rewarding. Hiking from Cerem to Doberdol was probably my favourite day – so varied and truly beautiful. The wildlife and biodiversity we saw was amazing and made us feel so happy and appreciative. We also appreciated the sensitivity to some of the conflict heritage that is still visible.
The majority of the accommodation is carefully chosen and the hosts are tremendously welcoming and relaxed. Our night in Theth was particularly special. The food (except the food poisoning) was great.
We loved how quiet some parts of the trails are – sometimes we could walk for several hours and not meet anybody. The level of effort, detail and consideration in the guidebook was very clear and we felt like we had chosen a company with a deep passion and love for this region, which really was special. The company is clearly very organised and with large and comprehensive networks.
We’d say it’s absolutely perfect if you are not very experienced hikers and you would benefit from the levels of organisation that are provided, and the sense of safety and wellbeing that we received from knowing there were people out there somehow looking out for us who we could contact in an emergency. We are fairly fit (usually bikepacking) but not experienced with hiking, so we felt confident with the physical challenge but not so much with the environment. This really gave us more confidence that in the future we can approach through-hiking ourselves and also where our knowledge and competence needs to improve. We travelled in a pair but we could see how so many families and groups were benefitting from the expertise of Zbulo – and sometimes we could see the big group tours and for a solo traveller I would recommend this in a heartbeat.
The downsides are a relative lack of flexibility and independence. When I became sick, if we had been independent then we probably would just extend our stay in the accommodation so that we could continue hiking and save some money, instead of needing to keep up with the tour. This isn’t at all a criticism of the company (!) as Ricardo was brilliant and so helpful, it’s just a reflection of some of the ways that there is a flipside to all the great positives 🙂
Vusanje (even though we were ill we were absolutely grateful to have had an additional night there), hike to Doberdol and hike from Vusanje to Theth
Bring travelsheets for Doberdol and Babino Polje and give nearly everything into the transported luggage
Hiking in Albania is absolutely stunning. The hike was more navigable, beautiful, and safer than we had imagined. My partner and I did the self-guided tour, and it was a great option. The trails are easy to follow, and the route zbulo sends you on differs from what the majority of hikers are doing. It was very nice to have a few day hikes away from all the other hikers. Zbulo does a great job at providing detailed information for you to travel on your own stress-free, without much work. I can not stress how gorgeous Albania is.
-As a side note, we saw other group tours, and that would NOT have been a good fit for us. If you feel comfortable outdoors and prefer a more peaceful hiking setting, I highly recommend doing a self-guided tour over a group tour.
My partner and I were blown away by Ricardo and the team. There is so much co-ordination and organisation that went into our trip but it went so smoothly. Even when we felt sick we were offered alternative routes in order to continue our travel. All the guest houses were well run by lovely families with delicious food. The peaks themselves were absolutely awe-inspiring. We would not hesitate to book again.
From the moment we booked The Natural Adventure Company kept in touch all the way. Met with delightful local company who gave clear directions . Luggage transfer was spot n. Accommodation as expected… wonderful local hosts who made us so welcome. Walking tough bit graded as expected . I would recommend to this holiday to fit walkers
The hike from dobberdol to babino polje and swimmkng in the lake
A great trek in a part of the world that is changing fast. Stunning views and landscapes. Great organisation by Zbulo which left us with more time to enjoy the sights.
Strenuous but incredible trip with wonderful albanian people and knockout views
Rained in the afternoons but otherwise exceeded all expectations
Eating wild berries on the route
The views
The people we met
The food
Bring a warm hat
Learn some Albanian
Bring some small change for tips
A fantastic experience exploring the Balkans. Incredible food, wonderful people and spectacular views. Loved the guesthouses a along the way. Enrich was wery helpful when we needed to change plans due to weather. Saw lots of fantastic flora and fauna on the trip.
The friendly Albanian people
The exceptional scenery
The camping in Doberdol was superfun
The dayhike in the national park
– Stressing that they should not forget warm clothing. It gets colder in the mountains at night, even if it is hot during the day.
– Know how to work a gps. Necessary since the trail is not always visibly marked.
Hugging albanian animals 😉
It’s such a diamond this tour, I don’t know if I want to make a hype out of it and tell to many people. I’m worried that there will be too many tourists and it will loose its authenticity. But anyways:
– if you have hiking experience it’s easy
– please do know how to work a gps (elderly people?)
– during the day it’s hot but at night it’s cold => wear layers and be prepared for unexpected rain
Good organisation, easy with organised transport en guesthouses. Lots of history lessens about the cultures. With some research possible alone too but difficult to organize with transport
The organisation….. more than perfect!!!
Do it , it is an amazing experience.
The Zbulo organisation from beginning to end! The guides from the other groups were amazing; Agon and the other guide really made the extra effort to ask us how everything was going, whether we needed anything and just to be so incredibly friendly and interested. We loved doing the trek by ourselves and alos the kids enjoyed ecery minute and this was definitively a result of the friendly people we met on the way: the hosts of accomodations, the guides, the locals etc. Stunning nature, fabulous people and great organisation!!
Dont underestimate the difficulty of the trek each day but remember all along: it’s worth every sweaty effort- it’s a lifechanging and amazing experience!
Day-trip in Grbaja valley, hike from Vusanje to Theth
Very good advice an service when booking the tour. Website outdated.
Beyond words. The peaks of the Balkan trail is so beautiful! We did the self guided tour and Zbulo had organised it perfectly.
Tip: bring euro’s!
Personally for me it was stay in Babino Polje. The place was insanely beautiful (both the accomodation and the green hills), exceptional food and very friendly host.
I really liked all the people of the Albania, felt really welcomed, everybody were always smiling, ready to help, polite.
Other my friends really enjoyed the boat ride in fjord (it was almost magical with thunderstorm), lake in the mountains near Babino Polje, local food (although we got eventually tired of the same cheese).
Unfortunately we encountered very bad weather. We had to leave our rucksaks at the boat soaking in the rain. Fortunately, we had raincovers, but we were still worried about our things getting wet.
The very good gear is essential! Waterproof and windproof jacket, warm clothes, decent hiking shoes, cover for backpack. Consider also taking raincover, thermos.
Hikes overall are very easy, I think it is suitable even for first-timers, but the gear should really be appropriate.
Highly recommended, just be prepared for the Doberdoll for the holes in houses and the food. But in Doberdoll was extremely friendly host Leonard.
The campfire in Doberdol together with the daughter from the guest family Nela and of course the overnight in the wooden cabins in Babino Polje and the hiking trail from Moonlight guesthouse over the pass to Theth.
It doesn’t make sense to buy a prepaid card for Albania as mostly there is no signal and in the meantime most of the accommodations have already Wifi.
We had a wonderful time in the mountains of Albania and Montenegro. Our tour was perfectly organised, all transfers were absolutely on time and reliable. The route and description were very good. The accommodation was typical for the country, clean and we were always very warmly welcomed. The food was always typical of the country, plentiful, fresh and very tasty. All in all, excellent and highly recommended.

On each self-guided tour, we hand out a GPS Unit containing all GPS tracks of the trip and a simple mobile phone with a local SIM card, so guests can contact us in case problems arise. Both are already included, no extra fee or deposit is required. However, we do charge a fee in case of loss or damage, to cover part of the replacement cost. The fee is to be paid in cash to our drivers on-site.
Fees in case of loss or damage:
- GPS Unit: €150
- Mobile Phone: €30
You only carry a light daypack with the items needed during the day. Your luggage is transported by vehicle and car from one accommodation.
- Luggage is transported and you have access to it every day.
- This is limited to 15 kg per piece and person.
- Please take only soft pieces like duffel bags or rucksacks.
- Avoid plastic suitcases or metal flight cases. Items with hard shell are at the risk of being damaged and can be difficult (extra cost) or impossible (no luggage transport) to handle.
- A large sturdy trash bag comes in handy to protect items from abrasion or getting wet. While the luggage will be covered in plastic tarps, in case of rain, this is no ultimate protection. A waterproof duffel is the best possible option.
- A daypack in the 20-35 liter range is recommended for the hikes. There needs to be sufficient space to store warm layer, rain/wind/sun protection, water, lunch and personal items.
- Additional luggage may be stored at the initial/final hotel and recollect at the end of the trip - for example if you're booked in Shkodra or Tirana prior to the trip.
Zbulo tours don't always follow the official Peaks of the Balkans route the way it is described on maps and guidebooks. The original route was designed for independent hikers walking point-to-point. To show you the best of the trail, we decided to include transfers that skip dirt and asphalt roads as well as replace lesser sections with highlights off route, for example the Grbaja Valley. Some of our adaptations have been taken up by the general public and our now the quasi default, for example the crossing from Valbona to Cerem via the Persllopit and Bor Pass. The Zbulo team helped develop the route in 2012 and started running the first guided group tours ever on it in 2014 - you're in good hands. :)
There's an early departure from Shkodra on day two, the transfer leaves the hotel at 6:15 am. If you're looking to get a good nights sleep, you may add a pre-trip overnight in the city or at an airport hotel and transfer to Shkodra on the follwoing day.

The hikes were absolutely gorgeous. The trip covers the highlights of the Peaks of the Balkans, and a few transfers to the start and end of hikes keep it to a condensed 8 days. The guesthouses were all great, set in beautiful mountain spots with kind, welcoming hosts, and the traditional local food was delicious and very filling. I’d highly recommend this tour, and the October colours were stunning!

8-day guided Albanian Coastal Trail
Coastal paths, olive groves and hilltop villages between the Ionian Sea and Llogara
Just a fabulous trip. Albania is a fantastic country – stunning, friendly people and felt very safe. Walking was amazing – views to die for. Hotel choices were great and drivers all informative helpful and reliable. Bring proper boots. Some of the paths are rocky and unstable. Would thoroughly recommend.
