Peaks of the Balkans

Hiking beyond borders in Albania, Kosovo and Montenegro

In 2012 the Peaks of the Balkans became the region’s first cross-border hiking trail. Its 192 km long circular route spans the Accursed Mountains border triangle between Albania, Kosovo and Montenegro and connects the most attractive destination in each country.

The route is unchallenged in its variety of landscapes. The trail rises from the turquoise rivers and stone houses with wooden shingles out of deep cut valleys and through ancient fairytale beech across green pastures and colorful carpets of flower meadows to the Dolomite-like peaks towering over Grbaja Valley, the endless rugged karst landscapes of the Central Massif, alpine tundra surrounding the three border peak Trekufiri and volcanic bedrock of Mt. Gjeravica.

Sections of the trail can be hiked in one week, plan to spend twelve days to cover the entire route across all three countries.

The Zbulo team was responsible for developing the Albanian share of the Peaks of the Balkans Trail and later became the local stakeholder in a private public partnership between DAV Summit Club and GIZ to promote the trail. In 2013 this effort was also recognized by the Adventure Travel Trade Association’s (ATTA) who awards motivated operators with a demonstrated potential for positive impact on local cultural, ecological or historical resources while showing a high level of professionalism and ethical business practices.
