Himare – Lukove – Sasaj – Himare

It’s time to leave the modernized side of the riviera and drive down to the older villages of the coastline. We start our walk in Piqeras, through shepherds paths we climb to a coastal ridge, allowing us to admire the views of uniform terraced hills falling steep into the turquoise sea and Corfu in the very close background. The bow-shaped trail will take us past Sasaj, the village has a melancholic feeling to it. Meeting the locals, we find out more about the culture of Laberia and it’s formerly half nomadic warrior people inhabiting the highlands near the coastline. We descend to Lukove and take a stroll on its vibrant alleys, gardens full of fruit trees and stunning pendulous flowers over each home. At its central improvised bar, we may meet some of the few remaining older residents. As beautiful as these coastal villages are, after communism they were rather left behind from the chaotic development of the country. Through the serpentines, we drive back to Himara for some rest. In the evening we go on an evening stroll at the busy center or a drink by the beach.
